THE KICKBACK

South Dakota: The forgotten tundra somewhere between Denver and Chicago, where the distance between actual cities is too much for even radio station bandwidth to bear. Social agenda politics and “not making a big deal of things” seem to be the state’s M.O., though this hasn’t prevented the state’s premier rock act, The Kickback, from garnering regional acclaim and national attention. A straight-out-of-high school attempt at a rock and roll band by member Billy Yost has become a whole lot more than the University of South Dakota-begun act could have planned on.

Comprised of brothers Billy and Danny Yost and longtime friends Zachariah Verdoorn and Cody Raterman, The Kickback draws its influence from musicians who take risks, as well as each other’s often paradoxical musical tastes. Fusing their version of alternative rock with granulated elements of eletronica, hard beats, and whatever else they’ve been listening to that week; comparisons ranging from “The rock and roll Police” to “The Strokes if they liked DJ Shadow more than the Velvet Underground” have been thrown their way by publication and peers alike. The Kickback’s notoriously raging live shows have seen broken chairs, bloody knuckles, and the exorcism-like fury of a band who are in love with what they do.

Throughout 2007-2008, The Kickback toured relentlessly in support of their first EP, The Diary Farm Sessions, earning themselves a reputation as road warriors. Their building reputation has earned them slots opening for influential and award winning groups such as mewithoutYou, Shiny Toy Guns, Fishbone, and Plain White T’s to name a few. Following a mini-tour and recording session with Fishbone, bassist Norwood Fisher praised their music and live show proclaiming that “The Kickback are musically aggressive and smart. The aggressiveness of the stage show grabbed me initially; they exploded off the stage”.

2008 brought the release of the EP A New History, which was recorded at the widely celebrated ARC studios in Omaha, run by Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes and home to recording artists such as Cursive, The Faint, Rilo Kiley and many others. The Kickback toured the nation in support of A New History’s release and sold out of two pressings of the disc while still on the road.

2009 will bring the largest body of recorded works from The Kickback to date, and the group will be relocating to Chicago in August in order to tour and make music full time, while their roots will be planted firmly in the dirt of their home, the Southern Dakota.

The Kickback’s latest single/b-side “Alliteration, etc” is now available through all digital media outlets through SPAT! Records. The song "Roman Regret" from the single was selected to play in Guitar Center stores nationwide for the month of April. They were also selected to play at the 2009 Vans Warped Tour.
